This boy. Twelve years ago yesterday, he entered the world, long then like he is tall now, and just about as easy-going. I had been mothering two daughters and could not imagine what I was going to do with a little boy. Since that day, he has taught me so much about the wonders of boys, their innate sense of humor, their vulnerability and empathy, their love of all creatures (especially slithery ones and chickens, always chickens), their desire and motivation to do well at the things they put their mind to, and, above all, the almost impossible depth and expression of their love and need for their Mamas (and Dad and siblings). Happy Birthday, my sweet boy! I can’t imagine my life without you.
